China Everbright Bank Issues ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Sunshine Debit Card¡± and ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Love Credit Card¡±

¡ª¡ªFulfill Social Responsibility, Support Public Projects

    To support the public project of ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers¡±, China Everbright Bank held a press conference in Beijing on the afternoon of May 21, and ceremoniously launched the ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Sunshine Debit Card¡± and the ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Love Credit Card¡± jointly with the China Women Development Foundation, which earned warm and widely applause from all walks of the society for initiative fulfillment of social responsibility and integration of business development with support to public projects.

    China Everbright Bank and China Women Development Foundation attached high importance to the press conference; Ms. Huang Qingyi, Secretary of CCP Committee, Vice Chairman and First Secretary of the Secretariat of All-China Women's Federation, Mr. Guo You, President and Vice-Secretary of the CCP Committee of China Everbright Bank, Ms. Mo Wenxiu, Vice Chairman and Secretary of the Secretariat of All-China Women's Federation attended the conference. After Mr. Guo issued the first ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Sunshine Debit Card¡± to Ms. Huang, Ms. Huang donated to the foundation through the ATM machine at the conference.

    Co-issued by China Everbright Bank and China Women Development Foundation, the ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Sunshine Debit Card¡± and ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Love Credit Card¡± are themed on the public project of ¡°Land of Love, Water Cellar for Mothers¡±. It is known that amount consumed with the ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Sunshine Debit Card¡± can be redeemed into charity points and donated to the project of ¡°Land of Love, Water Cellars for Mother¡± by China Everbright Bank in a regular manner.

    China Everbright Bank started cooperating with All-China Women's Federation and China Women Development Foundation in supporting the social project of ¡°Land of Love, Water Cellar for Mother¡± since 2005. In addition to donating in the Bank¡¯s name, China Everbright Bank organizes employees to donate to the project and places charity boxes at operating outlets to receive donations. Till now, it has donated RMB4 million consecutively, and the water cellars built in Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi have been put into use, basically addressing the drinking difficulty of local people; China Everbright Bank will continue supporting this large-scale social project and donate funds to build ¡°ten thousand¡± cellars for mother.

    In 2007, China Everbright Bank increased the support to the ¡°Land of Love, Water Cellar for Mothers¡± project, and reinforced the publicity. It launched the ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Love from Everbright¡± theme activities together with All-China Women's Federation and China Women Development Foundation, and held ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Everbright of Love¡± theme picture exhibition in 200 self-service banks o to arise social attention to the difficult life in the dry west area and encourage people to contribute to the ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers¡± project.

    In order to facilitate the public¡¯s donations to the ¡°Land of Love, Water Cellar for Mothers¡± project, China Everbright Bank makes full use of its widespread operating outlets and channels, and accepted donations via ATM machine and online banking system, apart from the existing donation boxes and outlet counters. Accordingly, the donation project is expanded to the whole country, and the multiple donation channels including boxes, outlet counters, ATM machines and online banking system, largely improve the convenience for people¡¯s donation.

    The theme project of ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Love from Everbright¡± co-initiated by China Everbright Bank and All-China Women's Federation and China Women Development Foundation is a brand new mode of corporate support to social public undertaking; and the acceptance of social donations via ATM machines and online banking system innovates the donation method, simplifies the donation procedures, lowers the threshold of donation and cuts down the intermediary expenses, therefore energetically promoting the public undertaking.

    At the press conference, relevant leaders of China Women Development Foundation pointed out during the interview that, by issuing ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Sunshine Debit Card¡± and ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers ¡¤ Love Credit Card¡±, China Everbright Bank integrates business development with the social project of ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers¡± and creates a new expressway for the donation of cardholders amidst boosting the business development. China Everbright Bank shall be appreciated for its initiative fulfillment of social responsibility and active contribution to society and the people.

Background: Introduction of the ¡°Land of Love, Water Cellar for Mothers¡± Project

    Aridity and short water supply is a worldwide issue. In the west of China, one of the mast arid zones in the world, women have become the major labor force of families in the poverty-stricken west area and are forced to fetch waters miles or tens of miles away due to the population mobility during the social transition.

    At the time when the UN millennium development objective was developed, China Women Development Foundation initiated the large scale charity project of ¡°Love for the West, Sharing Mother's Love¡± with assistance of All-China Women¡¯s Federation, Beijing Municipal Government and CCTV in 2000, with a view to supporting the Western China Development strategy and the ¡°Build a Beautiful Homeland in the West with Efforts of All Women in China¡± slogan raised by All-China Women¡¯s Federation and to solving the drinking difficulties of women and local people in the west. During the project, charity funds of RMB116 million were raised and used as the special fund of "Land of Love, Water Cellar for Mothers" project. After being implemented since 2001, the project received the widespread acclaim from all walks of the society. In October 2001, the ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers¡± project was included in the White Paper of Rural Development and Poverty Relief of the State Council and was selected Top 10 news of Chinese women; it was elected one of the Top 10 Public Welfare Brands of China and won the ¡°China Charity Award¡± in November 2005.

    Till now, the total investment has reached RMB330 million, of which RMB170 million was donated by China Women Development Foundation. As of the end of 2006, the project covered 23 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in the west, and built more than 100,000 ¡°Water Cellars for Mothers¡± and nearly 1,200 small-scaled centralized water supply facilities, benefiting nearly 1.3 million people. In the meantime of constructing water supply facilities, efforts are also made to integrate resources around water cellar areas, extend supporting poverty alleviation projects and publicize the ¡°1 + 5¡± mode, i.e. a ¡°Water Cellar for Mothers¡±, a solar cooker or biogas digester, a sanitary toilet, a green house of vegetables and fruits, a fold of poultry and a beautiful courtyard.
