Uniqueness Creates Brand and Brand Means Uniqueness
¡¡¡¡¡ª¡ª Speech at the Awarding Ceremony of 2007 First Financial Daily¡¯s Value Rating of Financial Brands

      I thank the sponsors for inviting me to attend and address the awarding ceremony of the 2007 First Financial Daily¡¯s Value Rating of Financial Brands. And I am also grateful to the experts for rating Everbright Bank as one of the 10 best Chinese banks in the country.

¡¡¡¡Today I wish to focus my speech on the topic ¡°uniqueness creates brand and brand means uniqueness¡±. Social life has become growingly colorful. Only one who has what other people do not have and only one who is better when other people also have what he has can conquer the market and create a brand. I like calligraphy. I often say that a calligrapher must imitate the works of Wang Xizhi but he will remain second to Wang Xizhi no matter how good his imitations are. One can claim to have ¡°his own style¡± only when he imitates, when his imitations are good and when he constantly innovates and creates. (Naturally, ¡°his own style¡± must be examined by history and recognized by society.) What is more unique is more social. And what is more national is more international. China cannot claim to have the best oil paintings in the world; but it certainly can claim to have the best Chinese paintings and calligraphies in the world. Everbright Bank is undergoing reform and restructuring, and will soon score fresh progress in this respect. But overall, it faces lots of difficulties. The bank has worked hard to develop wealth management, and wealth management has become its business brand. In this respect, the bank enjoys the early-bird advantage and some comparative advantage. The issuance of its personal wealth management products has exceeded RMB 150 billion, claiming a 21-percent share of this market segment. As a result, it has become the largest issuing bank of Renminbi wealth management products and has been cited first in this respect for three consecutive years by the Sina, Sohu and Hexun Internet users. The bank has created 10 firsts in wealth management. In 2004, the bank used the technique of bond asset securitization and developed the sunshine B plan for wealth management, which was the first Renminbi wealth management product ever offered by a Chinese bank. In April 2005, the bank developed the sunshine A+ plan for wealth management, which was the first Renminbi structuralized wealth management product. In December 2005, the bank used the principle of credit breach of contract exchange and developed the sunshine C plan for wealth management, which was the first Renminbi credit-linked wealth management product and thus explored a way to transform credit risk from inside the bank to the market. In 2006, the bank took advantage of the double-layer trust system and developed the sunshine T plan for wealth management, which was the first trust-integrated wealth management product and realized the integration of wealth management funds with the trust and stock markets. In August 2007, the bank developed the first insurance-included wealth management product, which represented a new approach to banking-insurance cooperation. In September 2007, the bank developed the first structuralized wealth management product embedded with A-stock options, which became a new tool for investing in domestic stock markets. Improving wealth management processes and risk management, the bank became the first to entrust wealth management investment in 2005, thus strictly separating the bank¡¯s agent business from its own business. In October 2006, the bank was the first to introduce both internal risk rating and external credit rating for wealth management products, thus making the risk disclosure of wealth management products more transparent. In November 2006, the bank was the first to introduce inter-bank agent sales for wealth management products, thus promoting the common development of national and regional banks. In 2007, the bank was the first to develop a registration system for bank wealth management, thus fundizing the issuance of bank wealth management products.

¡¡¡¡In the future, Everbright Bank will take wealth management as its main brand and will define wealth management as a core innovative product and an important strategic option. It will further consolidate its position as a market leader and strengthen risk management and brand contribution, and move from single-product innovation to serial-product innovation. By so doing, it will pursue all-round innovation that highlights wealth management and covers product, service, management, technology, organization, system, concept and culture. This will help the bank to transform its business and build itself from a medium-size commercial bank into a new bank with certain uniqueness. In addition, it will take advantage of the comparative advantage it has gained in the field of emerging businesses such as asset management, investment banking and financial derivative transaction and break through the existing pattern of competition to strive for greater development space in an increasingly complex financial climate.
